Italy's largest lake

Lake Garda is Italy’s largest lake. It is over 50 km long and 16 km wide at its widest point. Lake Garda stretches across three provinces: Lombardy, Trentino and Veneto. A varied landscape surrounds the lake: from the rugged mountains and steep cliffs of Trentino in the west, to slightly undulating or even flat plains in the south.

Sunny beaches and fun water parks

All around Lake Garda are numerous sunny beaches, mostly pebble, but with sandy ones too. Particularly fine beaches can be found near Peschiera di Garda, Sirmione and San Felice del Benaco, for instance. Lake Garda is a Mecca for sailors and surfers, particularly the northern section. In this area you are always sure of wind, because a light breeze starts up practically every afternoon. Situated around the lake are several water parks, such as Caneva World Aquapark and Riovalli. Super fun for children and grownups alike! This is also true of Gardaland, Italy's biggest amusement park.

Bustling towns around Lake Garda

Lake Garda is blessed with lots of enchanting villages and towns. I’ve visited all of them, but I will mention a few here. Little medieval Lazise, for instance. In its ancient centre beside the lively harbour, you’ll find many shops, restaurants and bars. Another tourist attraction is Sirmione in the south, with an ancient fortress and car-free centre. Desenzano is great for shopping and going out. The little town of Garda in the north has a beautiful medieval centre, and you can take a nice stroll along its broad boulevard. Another place with a great boulevard is Salò. Other nice towns are Peschiera del Garda, which I’ve been visiting since my childhood, Bardolino in the wine region, and Gargnano on the west bank of the lake. And then there is Verona, of course. The city of Romeo and Juliet, which boasts a Roman amphitheatre (Arena). Here you can shop to your heart’s content, settle down on a terrace, and gorge on lovely food. You may also like to attend one of the renowned operas that are frequently staged in the Arena in summer.
